Students win silver at Tokyo Olympiad

HA NOI — Vietnamese students won two silver and two bronze medals at the recent 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad in Tokyo.

Nguyen Duc Binh of Thanh Hoa Province's Lam Son High School and Luu Nguyen Hong Quang of the High School for Gifted Students of HCM City won the silver medals.

Four Vietnamese attended the ten-day Olympiad from July 19, together with students from 69 countries and territories.

One dies, 29 injured as coach overturns

KON TUM — One passenger died and 29 were injured when a coach overturned on a bend in Dak Glei District in Central Highland Kon Tum Province yesterday.

The injured, including four children younger than 10, were taken to the Kon Tum General Hospital.

Police are investigating.

Surgeons save man pierced by stake

THUA THIEN-HUE — Surgeons took more than three hours to remove a 1.2m stake that pierced a man, 30, in Hue City.

The stake, which ran the man through, caused serious injury to his abdomen, intestines and bones.

His condition has been reported as no longer critical.

Three die as train hits taxi on highway

HA NOI — Three people were killed and two others injured when a train hit a taxi on National Highway 1A in Ha Noi's Thanh Tri District on Tuesday afternoon.

The taxi was reportedly crossing the tracks when it was hit by the Thong Nhat Train and dragged 30 metres.

Police are investigating.

Duong River pontoon re-opens to traffic

HA NOI — The pontoon over the Duong River at the eastern gateway to Ha Noi has been reopened to traffic after it was dismantled because of floods last Saturday.

More than 80 engineers have been on duty at the pontoon to ensure vehicle safety, reports the Engineer Corps High Command. — VNS
